This qualification (from our suite of health and social care level 2 courses) aims to develop and improve your employees’ skills and knowledge in relation to adult social care.

This free online course is designed specifically for employees seeking to develop their skills for a rewarding career in adult social care.

With an estimated 818,000 adults receiving publicly funded long-term social care and 224,000 episodes of short-term care in 2021/22 (according to the King's Fund), the need for skilled professionals in this field is evident.

This course, consisting of 9 units, will equip employees with the essential knowledge and skills required to excel in adult social care.

Throughout the course, employees will delve into crucial topics such as maintaining health and safety standards, effective communication strategies, respecting consent, and handling critical situations with confidence.

By successfully completing this program, learners will attain a Level 2 qualification in adult social care, demonstrating expertise and commitment to ensuring that vulnerable adults receive the care they deserve.

This course is equivalent to a level 5 in Scotland based on the Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework.

    Unit 1: Principles of communication in adult social care settings

    In this unit your employees will look at the importance of communication in adult social care settings and how to meet the communication and language needs, wishes and preferences of an individual. They will also look at reducing barriers to communication and confidentiality in adult social care settings.

    Unit 2: Principles of personal development in adult social care settings

    Within this unit your employees will begin to understand what is required for good practice in adult social care roles, how learning activities can develop knowledge, skills and understanding and how a personal development plan can contribute to own learning development.

    Unit 3: Principles of diversity, equality and inclusion in adult social care settings

    In this unit your employees will learn about the importance of diversity, equality and inclusion. They will learn about working in an inclusive way and how to access information, advice and support about diversity, equality, inclusion and discrimination.

    Unit 4: Principles of safeguarding and protection in health and social care

    In this unit your employees will learn how to recognise and respond to abuse. They will look at the national and local context of safeguarding and protection from abuse, how to reduce the likelihood of abuse occurring and how to recognise and report unsafe practices.

    Unit 5: Introduction to duty of care in health, social care or children’s and young people’s settings

    This unit will introduce your employees to duty of care, including the implications of duty of care, support available for addressing dilemmas that may arise about duty of care and how to respond to complaints.

    Unit 6: Understand the role of the social care worker

    In this unit your employees will learn about the role of the social care worker. They will look at working relationships in social care settings and the importance of working in ways that are agreed with the employer and working in partnership with others.

    Unit 7: Understand person-centred approaches in adult social care settings

    Within this unit your employees will learn about person-centred approaches for care and support. They will learn how to implement a person-centred approach in an adult social care setting, the importance of establishing consent when providing care or support, encouraging active participation and supporting an individual’s right to make choices and promoting their well-being.

    Unit 8: Understand health and safety in social care settings

    In this unit your employees will look at health and safety in social care settings. They will look at responsibilities relating to this, risk assessments, reducing the spread of infection, procedures for responding to accidents and illness, how to move and handle objects and individuals safely, handling hazardous substances, medication and food safely, and how to manage stress. They will also look at environmental safety procedures in social care settings.

    Unit 9: Understand how to handle information in social care settings

    Within this unit your employees will learn about the importance of secure handling of information in social care settings and how to access support for handling information in social care settings.
